Chapter 4 - The Blood Oath

Rocco drew his hidden sidearm in a fraction of a second, aiming at the driver.
"Give me one reason not to put a bullet between your eyes, Leo," Rocco threatened.
Leo calmly tossed his cigar into the river and raised his empty hands.
"Because I wired the boat with explosives, and my thumb is on the detonator," Leo replied smoothly.
Victoria cursed under her breath, raising her shotgun to aim at the traitor's chest.
"I swear my loyalty to the Caruso family, Rocco, not to a corrupt bride or a greedy underboss," Leo explained.
"I knew Marcus was planning a coup, so I played along to get this boat ready for your escape."
Rocco studied the older man's weathered face, looking for any sign of deception.
A second, massive explosion rocked the estate behind them, sending flames shooting into the night sky.
"We don't have time to debate this, get in the boat," Leo yelled over the roaring fire.
Rocco lowered his gun and jumped into the vessel, pulling Victoria and Noah aboard.
Leo slammed the throttle forward, tearing across the black water away from the burning mansion.
Rocco held his son tight, watching his empire crumble into ash and smoke.
They navigated the river for an hour until they reached a dilapidated warehouse on the city's edge.
Leo secured the boat and led them into a hidden safe room filled with weapons and cash.
"Marcus thinks you died in the fire, which gives us a twenty-four-hour advantage," Leo said.
Rocco set Noah down on a cot, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal rage.
"I don't need twenty-four hours, I am going to kill him tonight."

Victoria pulled a bloody flash drive from her pocket and tossed it onto the metal table.
"You can't kill him yet, Rocco, because he isn't the one who ordered the hit."
