Chapter 8 - The Dead Man's Switch

My blood ran completely cold at the mention of my sister.

I knew Adrian was ruthless enough to murder her without a second thought.

James stepped in front of me, shielding my body with his own.

Adrian demanded the lockbox, claiming it contained the only copy of his offshore bank accounts and treason records.

He promised to let us all walk away if James surrendered the evidence.

James looked back at me, his eyes filled with absolute sorrow.

He told me he loved me, and then he kicked the lockbox across the pavement toward Adrian.

Adrian laughed victoriously and bent down to pick it up.

He opened the lid and pulled out the old wedding photograph.

His triumphant smile vanished instantly.

He tore the photo apart, searching for a hidden microchip or ledger.

He screamed at James, demanding to know where the real evidence was.

James smiled a cold, hardened soldier's smile.

He said the evidence had never been in the box at all.

A blinding white spotlight suddenly bathed the entire street from above.

A police helicopter hovered overhead, its loudspeakers demanding Adrian drop his weapons.
