Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

I froze in the passenger seat, staring down the barrel of Leo's gun.
My mind raced to comprehend this sudden betrayal.
Leo smiled, and the friendly demeanor he had shown me completely vanished.
He said he didn't work for James at all.
He was Adrian's grandson, sent to gain my trust and lead me into a trap.
He demanded that I open the lockbox and give him the evidence.
I realized I had driven right into the hands of the enemy.
I slowly unlatched the metal box, pretending to comply with his orders.
My hand slipped inside, but I didn't grab the wedding photo.
I grabbed the heavy metal trowel I had tossed in there after digging up the box.
I swung the rusted tool with all my strength, striking Leo hard across the temple.
He dropped the gun and slumped against the driver's side window.
I unlocked the doors and scrambled out of the SUV.
I ran down the empty street, clutching the box and the burner phone.
The phone vibrated in my pocket with an incoming call.
I answered it, gasping for breath as I hid behind a brick wall.
A calm, authoritative voice told me not to panic.

The voice said to look up at the roof of the building across the street.
A red laser sight was pointed directly at my chest.
