Chapter 3 - The Safehouse

I followed the GPS directions on the burner phone.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.

I kept checking my rearview mirror, terrified of seeing Adrian's headlights.

The address led me to an abandoned industrial park on the edge of the city.

I pulled into a dark alleyway and parked my car behind a rusted dumpster.

The instructions told me to enter through a heavy steel door marked with a yellow X.

I pushed the door open and stepped into a dimly lit warehouse.

The air smelled like old dust and machine oil.

A young man stepped out from the shadows, holding a tactical flashlight.

He lowered the beam and told me his name was Leo.

He said he was an intelligence operative working directly for James.

I demanded to know why my husband had abandoned me for fifty-six years.

Leo explained that Adrian was a double agent who sold out James's unit to the enemy.

James had discovered the treason, but Adrian tried to kill him to cover it up.

James had to fake his death and go into deep cover to protect me from Adrian's powerful syndicate.

Suddenly, the steel door of the warehouse blew entirely off its hinges.

Smoke and fire filled the narrow entryway.

Adrian walked through the flames, accompanied by heavily armed mercenaries.
