Chapter 6 - The Sniper

I stood perfectly still, terrified to even breathe.

The red dot rested directly over my heart.

The voice on the phone told me to slowly place the lockbox on the ground.

I asked who was speaking, my voice trembling with fear.

The man laughed softly and said he was the one who cleaned up Adrian's messes.

He ordered me to step away from the box and turn around.

I slowly lowered the metal box onto the wet pavement.

I closed my eyes, waiting for the fatal gunshot that would end my fifty-six-year nightmare.

Instead, a loud, heavy thud echoed from the rooftop above.

The red laser dot vanished from my chest.

The voice on the phone cursed loudly before the line went completely dead.

I opened my eyes and looked around the empty street in confusion.

A heavy metal door opened from the building right beside me.

A tall man stepped out of the shadows, breathing heavily.

He was holding a sniper rifle by the barrel.

The streetlights caught the silver in his hair and the deep lines on his face.

It had been over half a century, but I knew those eyes instantly.

It was James.
