Chapter 20 - The Final Dawn

A year later, the Titan Rescue Foundation was the premier animal sanctuary in the state. We had successfully rehomed over five hundred dogs and cats, and Chloe had transferred to a local university to help me manage the facility’s marketing and adoptions.
It was late on a Friday evening. The staff had gone home, and the shelter was quiet, save for the soft, rhythmic snoring of the older dogs in the senior ward.
I was sitting on the floor of the main office, going over inventory paperwork, when Roman walked in. He was wearing casual jeans and a soft gray sweater, looking completely at peace. He carried two steaming mugs of hot chocolate, handing one to me before sitting down on the floor next to me.
Titan was asleep at our feet, his head resting heavily on Roman’s knee.
"We got a new intake today," I told him, leaning my head against his shoulder. "A terrified little pitbull mix. Found tied to a fence in the rain. She reminds me of how Titan used to look when you first brought him to the old store."
"She will be okay," Roman said softly, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "She is safe now. We all are."
I looked around the warm, brightly lit office. My life had turned into something out of a wild action movie, complete with gunfights, helicopters, and explosions. But looking at the man beside me, I realized I would not change a single second of it. The fire and the chaos had burned away the weak, timid girl I used to be, leaving behind a woman strong enough to stand beside a force of nature like Roman Calder.
"You know," Roman said suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat. I sat up straighter, my heart suddenly hammering against my ribs—but this time, not from fear.
Roman opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking diamond ring, elegant and perfectly cut, sparkling in the warm office light.
"I spent my whole life building empires out of shadows," Roman said, looking deeply into my eyes, his voice thick with emotion. "But the only thing I ever truly built that mattered was this life with you. Elara, will you marry me?"
Titan woke up, letting out a soft, happy huff, and nudged my hand with his wet nose, almost as if he was encouraging me.
Tears of pure happiness spilled down my cheeks. I did not hesitate.

"Yes," I whispered, throwing my arms around him. "Absolutely, yes."
Roman slid the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a kiss that promised a lifetime of safety, love, and entirely too many rescue dogs. The past was finally dead, and our new dawn had just begun.
