Chapter 18 - The True Drive

The immediate aftermath was a blur of flashing red and blue lights, shouting agents, and the bitter cold wind howling through the ruined bunker. FBI tactical teams dragged Silas and his surviving mercenaries out into the snow, securing them for transport.

Agent Miller walked over to Roman, holstering his weapon. He looked around the destroyed mountain fortress, shaking his head in disbelief.

"You cut it close this time, Calder," Miller said, pulling out a satellite phone. "Interpol just confirmed receipt of the master ledger. They are already conducting coordinated raids on Onyx Ring safehouses in London, Tokyo, and New York. The syndicate is dead."

Roman nodded, though his face remained tense. He did not care about the global victory. He immediately turned his back on the FBI agent and ran toward the server banks.

"Elara!" he called out, his voice cracking with raw panic.

I crawled out from behind the metal casing, covered in concrete dust, my tactical jacket torn and stained with soot. I was exhausted, bruised, and freezing, but I was entirely in one piece.

Roman dropped to his knees, pulling me into a crushing embrace. He buried his face in my neck, inhaling deeply as if proving to himself that I was actually alive.

"I am here," I whispered, wrapping my arms tightly around his broad shoulders. "I am okay. We did it."

Titan trotted over, limping slightly from the chaotic fight, and shoved his massive head between us, whining softly for attention. I laughed through my tears, kissing the top of the brave dog's head.

"You saved my life again, buddy," I told him.

Roman pulled back, looking into my eyes. The cold, ruthless mercenary I had seen fight moments ago was gone, replaced by the man who had bought me coffee and helped me carry heavy bags of kibble just a year ago.

"When Silas showed you that video..." Roman started, his voice thick with guilt. "When you saw what I used to be... I thought I lost you."

I reached up, gently wiping away a streak of dirt and blood from his cheek.

"I do not care about the man you were fifteen years ago, Roman," I said firmly, holding his gaze. "I care about the man who jumped off a building to save me. The man who stood on a pressure plate bomb to save my sister. The man who just burned down the biggest criminal empire in the world to protect our future. That is the man I love."

Roman’s breath hitched. He closed the distance between us, kissing me with a fierce, desperate passion that completely chased away the freezing mountain air.

"Let's go home," he whispered against my lips.
