Chapter 19 - The Executioner

The legal fallout of the Onyx Ring’s destruction took three agonizing months to conclude. Because the syndicate had infiltrated so many levels of the government, the trials were held in closed federal courts. Roman and I spent most of our time in heavily guarded safehouses while the FBI systematically dismantled Silas’s remaining assets.
Silas himself was locked away in a supermax prison, facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Elias, having tried to flip on Silas to reduce his own sentence, mysteriously choked to death on his dinner tray a week into the trials—a final, grim reminder of the syndicate's reach, even in its death throes.
But finally, the dust settled. The government formally cleared Roman of all past charges in exchange for his cooperation in bringing down the global ring.
It was a crisp, bright Tuesday morning when we finally walked out of the federal courthouse in Washington D.C., completely free citizens. There were no mercenaries waiting in the shadows. There were no tracking devices hidden in our dog’s collar. For the first time in over a year, I looked up at the sky and felt absolutely no fear.
Chloe was waiting by our rented SUV, holding a massive iced coffee. She ran over and hugged me tightly.
"So, it is really over?" she asked, looking between Roman and me with hopeful eyes.
"It is over," Roman confirmed, a genuine, relaxed smile spreading across his face.
We drove back to our city, the silence in the car feeling peaceful rather than tense. The government had seized Silas’s massive financial assets, funneling the clean money back into the city’s reconstruction fund. Roman had quietly bought the empty lot where Second Chance Pet Supply used to stand.
When we pulled up to the location, my jaw dropped.
Instead of a small, cramped retail space, Roman had overseen the construction of a massive, state-of-the-art animal rescue and rehabilitation center. The building was beautiful, featuring huge glass windows, outdoor play yards for the dogs, and a sleek, modern veterinary clinic attached to the side.
The large sign above the front doors read: The Titan Rescue Foundation.
"Roman..." I gasped, covering my mouth as tears of joy pricked my eyes.
"You said you wanted to save them all," Roman said, stepping out of the car and opening my door. "Now you have the facility to do it. Fully funded, fully staffed, and entirely yours."
May you like
Titan barked happily, jumping out of the car and immediately running toward the massive green lawn of the play yard, rolling in the fresh grass with pure, unadulterated joy.
I threw my arms around Roman’s neck, kissing him deeply. This was not just a store. This was our future, built from the ashes of everything we had survived.
