Chapter 8 - The Escape

I kicked furiously, my heel connecting solidly with the tall man's wrist.

He grunted in pain and released his iron grip on my leg.

I scrambled backward as the heavy steel door slammed shut with a definitive, echoing boom.

I was safe in the corridor, but the ship's emergency alarms were blaring loudly above my head.

I quickly navigated the maze of crew hallways, making my way back to the main passenger areas.

Security officers were running in every direction, trying to locate the source of the lockdown.

I found Captain Reynolds directing her team near the grand atrium.

"Two armed men just tried to kidnap me in the lower laundry facility," I reported, completely out of breath.

Captain Reynolds immediately dispatched an armed tactical team down to the lower decks.

"We have them trapped behind the blast doors," the captain assured me.

"I want my entire family removed from this ship at the very next port," I demanded.

"They will be handed over to the Mexican federal police in three hours," Captain Reynolds confirmed.

I walked back to my penthouse suite, locking the heavy door and engaging the deadbolt.

I poured myself a large glass of wine and stepped out onto the private balcony.

The ocean breeze felt incredibly refreshing against my heated skin.

I watched the dark water rush past the hull, finally feeling truly separated from the toxic people who raised me.

My phone chimed on the table inside, signaling a new email notification.

I walked inside and picked up the device, expecting an apology from Brandon or a threat from Dad.

Instead, the email was from my bank's elite fraud protection department in Denver.

"Dear Miss Miller, we need to verify a massive wire transfer initiated from your primary checking account ten minutes ago."

I stared at the screen in absolute horror, realizing my nightmare was far from over.

Vanessa had not just stolen my room; she had stolen my primary security tokens before she was arrested.
