Chapter 6 - The Mother of All Lies

Mom looked completely terrified, constantly glancing over her shoulder at the crowded ballroom.

"Dad is locked in the brig, Mom, he cannot hurt you," I said coldly.

"It is not your father I am afraid of," she stammered, pulling me into a quiet corner.

"He owes a lot of money to some very dangerous men in Denver."

I rolled my eyes, exhausted by the endless financial disasters my parents created.

"That sounds like a personal problem, Mom," I replied, turning to walk away.

She grabbed my wrist with surprising strength, her fingernails digging into my skin.

"They did not plant those drugs to frame you, Millie," she cried softly.

"They planted them because they intended to use your luggage to smuggle it through customs to pay off the debt."

The sheer reality of their betrayal finally hit me with full force.

They were not just trying to steal my money; they were willing to turn me into an international drug mule without my knowledge.

"You are completely dead to me," I whispered, yanking my arm free from her grasp.

"Please, Millie, the men he owes money to are on this ship right now!" she pleaded.

I froze, scanning the elegant crowd of passengers enjoying their champagne and caviar.

"Dad told them which room you were in, and they are coming to collect their merchandise tonight," she warned.

Mom turned and practically ran out of the ballroom, leaving me standing alone in stunned silence.

I quickly abandoned my drink and rushed toward the nearest security phone on the wall.

Before I could pick up the receiver, two large men in expensive tailored suits stepped out from behind a marble pillar.

One of them pressed a hard, metallic object directly against my ribs.

"Walk quietly toward the service elevators, Miss Miller, or things will get very messy right here," the man whispered menacingly.
