Chapter 10 - The Horizon

"Miss Miller, these officers are here to escort you off the ship," Captain Reynolds said with a strange, knowing smile.

My heart dropped into my stomach for a fraction of a second.

Then, Captain Reynolds handed me a pristine, stamped document from the American Embassy.

"You are not under arrest, Millie," the captain clarified warmly.

"The cartel members confessed everything, and your family has been officially charged with federal conspiracy."

The Mexican officers tipped their hats to me respectfully, waiting to escort me safely to the airport.

"Your bank also verified the fraud on your accounts after reviewing our security footage," Captain Reynolds added.

"All of your stolen funds have been fully restored, and your sister is facing an additional twenty years for wire fraud."

I let out a massive sigh of relief, feeling the heavy chains of my past finally shatter into a million pieces.

I packed my designer luggage and walked off that massive cruise ship with my head held high.

I did not look back at the local jail where my toxic parents and sister were currently rotting.

I flew back to Denver, completely free to live my life without anyone draining my energy or my bank account.

I walked into my pristine condo, dropping my bags onto the shining hardwood floor.

The absolute silence of my home felt like the ultimate, hard-won victory.

I poured myself a glass of expensive wine and walked over to sort through my accumulated mail.

There was a thick, heavy envelope sitting on the counter, sealed with dark red wax.

I tore it open and pulled out a certified letter from a prestigious New York law firm.

The first line stated that my late grandfather had left his massive fortune entirely to his only biological grandchild.

The second line revealed that my father had been secretly adopted, and the man who sent this letter was my real, biological dad.
