Chapter 1 - The Dead Man’s Toast

The Archbishop of Naples raised his hands, the gold embroidery on his vestments catching the fading Amalfi sun. The crowd of five hundred billionaires, royals, and tech moguls held their breath.

"If anyone can show just cause why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony," the Archbishop intoned, his voice echoing over the silent Belvedere Courtyard, "speak now, or forever hold your peace."

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant crashing of the Tyrrhenian Sea against the cliffs. Sophia smiled softly at Victor. He looked like a conqueror in his bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his icy blue eyes fixed entirely on her.

"I have a cause."

The voice did not come from the seated guests. It came from the top of the sweeping marble staircase leading down to the terrace.

The string duo abruptly stopped playing. Five hundred heads turned in unison.

Standing at the top of the stairs was a man wearing a perfectly tailored, albeit dust-covered, charcoal suit. His face was rugged, bearing a faint silver scar across his left cheek, and he held a heavy leather briefcase.

Sophia’s bouquet of white orchids slipped from her trembling hands, scattering across the travertine floor. All the blood drained from her face.

"Gabriel?" she whispered, her voice fracturing.

It was her older brother. The rightful heir to the Royal House of Savoy. The man who had allegedly died in a fiery Maserati crash on the winding roads of Monaco five years ago.

Victor’s perfectly calculated mask slipped for a fraction of a second. His jaw clenched, and he gave a microscopic nod to the perimeter security team.

Gabriel descended the stairs, his eyes locked entirely on Victor. "You look surprised, Victor. Did you really think burning my car to ashes would be enough to erase me?"

The crowd erupted into chaotic whispers. The paparazzi, hidden in the cliffs, began firing their flashbulbs like a strobe light.

"Gabriel," Sophia choked out, lifting the heavy skirts of her Vera Wang gown, stepping away from the altar. "You’re alive? How..."

"I’m alive, Sophia," Gabriel said, stopping ten feet from the altar. He opened the leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of heavily redacted blueprints. "And I am here to tell you that the man you are about to marry didn't just buy our family's debt. He orchestrated it. He stole the proprietary quantum-algorithm our father funded, patented it under his own company, and murdered our parents to cover his tracks."

The courtyard exploded into pandemonium. Victor stepped forward, his face a mask of lethal calm.

"Security," Victor commanded, his voice booming over the chaos. "Remove this imposter immediately. My fiancé’s grief is being exploited."

As four armed guards rushed the altar, Gabriel didn't flinch. He looked at Sophia with desperate intensity. "Run, Sophia! He doesn't love you. He only needs your royal bloodline to legally absorb the European assets!"

Before Sophia could process the horrifying truth, Victor’s hand wrapped around her wrist with bone-crushing force.
