Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

Evelyn stopped in her tracks, staring at the man she had trusted with her life.
Elias looked at her with a completely blank, unapologetic expression.
"I am sorry, Evelyn," he said, lowering his weapon slightly.
"Richard offered me ten million dollars to ensure you never made it out of this city alive."
Evelyn felt her heart shatter, but her face remained a mask of pure stone.
"You sold out a child for a paycheck, Elias," she sneered with absolute disgust.
Maya was crying softly in the chair, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at her mother.
"Let the girl go, she has nothing to do with this war," Evelyn pleaded, dropping her gun to the floor.
"I cannot leave any witnesses," Elias replied coldly, raising his weapon again.
Evelyn realized she had completely run out of allies and options.
She slowly raised her hands in the air, pretending to accept her inevitable death.
"Before you shoot me, you should probably check your bank accounts," Evelyn said with a confident smirk.
Elias frowned, hesitating for a crucial fraction of a second.
"I knew Richard was manipulating the finances, so I hacked his offshore accounts six months ago," she explained.
"I moved all of the money, including your pathetic ten million dollars, into a heavily encrypted trust."
Elias immediately pulled out his phone and checked his offshore balance.
His face turned pale as he saw the account was completely drained.
"If you kill me, that money disappears forever," Evelyn promised fiercely.
The mercenaries lowered their weapons, looking at Elias for new orders.
They were loyal to the money, not to the man.

Elias gritted his teeth, knowing she had completely outsmarted him.
Before he could negotiate a new deal, the heavy warehouse doors were blown completely off their hinges.
