Chapter 2 - The Glass Cage

The bullet shattered the glass table inches from Evelyn's hand.

She dove behind the heavy leather sofa as a second shot tore through the air.

Richard screamed in panic and dropped his crystal glass onto the floor.

"What are you doing!" Richard yelled at the armed men.

"You were supposed to wait until I got the offshore passwords from her!"

Evelyn realized instantly that her husband had hired these mercenaries to kill her.

The divorce was never going to happen because he needed her to die in a tragic home invasion.

"Give us the encryption keys, Mrs. Vance, and we make this quick," the lead gunman demanded.

Evelyn stayed pressed against the floor, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She had anticipated his greed, but she had underestimated his willingness to murder.

She reached under the sofa and found the hidden panic button she had installed months ago.

She pressed it, immediately dropping heavy steel security shutters over the penthouse windows.

The doors locked down, sealing everyone inside a vault of reinforced steel.

The gunmen cursed in the sudden darkness as the emergency red lights flickered on.

"You trapped yourself in here with us," Richard laughed nervously from across the room.

"No, Richard," Evelyn's voice echoed through the hidden intercom system.

"I trapped you in here with the ventilation system."

A thick, white gas began pouring from the ceiling vents into the locked room.

The mercenaries began to cough violently and collapsed to the ground within seconds.

Richard gasped for air, crawling desperately toward the locked elevator.

Evelyn stood up holding a small oxygen mask over her face.

She watched her husband lose consciousness completely.

But as she stepped toward the control panel, the metal elevator doors were violently ripped open from the outside.
