Chapter 7 - The Wreckage

Evelyn woke up to the smell of burning rubber and gasoline.

Her vision was blurred, and blood dripped slowly down her forehead.

She was still sitting in the passenger seat of the wrecked van.

She looked over and saw that Elias was gone, leaving his tactical vest behind on the seat.

Richard was groaning in the back of the van, pinned underneath heavy equipment crates.

Evelyn grabbed her dropped weapon and forced her aching body out of the crushed vehicle.

She walked around to the back doors and ripped them open.

Richard looked up at her, begging for help as the smell of gasoline grew stronger.

"Where is my daughter, Richard," she asked, her voice cold as ice.

"She is at the shipping yards on Pier 44," he coughed, spitting blood onto the metal floor.

"Please, Evelyn, the van is going to explode, you have to pull me out!"

Evelyn looked at the man who had tried to murder her, steal her life, and harm her only child.

She simply lowered her gun and turned her back on him.

She walked away into the foggy morning air without saying a single word.

A massive explosion rocked the street behind her, sending a wave of heat across her back.

She did not flinch, nor did she look back at the burning wreckage.

She stole a car from a nearby parking lot and drove recklessly toward the harbor.

She arrived at Pier 44, finding it completely deserted except for one large warehouse.

She kicked the side door open and stepped into the dim, cavernous building.

She saw Maya tied to a chair in the center of the room.

But as Evelyn rushed forward to untie her, the warehouse lights slammed on with a blinding flash.

A dozen heavily armed mercenaries stepped out of the shadows, and Elias was leading them.
