Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in the Dark

The metallic click of a firearm echoed through the pitch-black basement.
Victor immediately pushed Lily and Ethan behind his own body to shield them.
A bright tactical flashlight snapped on, blinding Victor for a moment.
The man holding the gun was Marcus, Victor’s most trusted head of security.
Marcus had apparently been on Serena’s secret payroll the entire time.
"I am sorry, Mr. Blackwood, but she pays significantly better than you do," Marcus stated coldly.
Marcus demanded that Victor step away from the coal chute and surrender the medical files.
The thick smoke in the room was growing denser, making it incredibly difficult to breathe.
Lily began coughing violently as she tried to shield Ethan’s tiny face with her shirt.
Victor knew he had to create a distraction before they all suffocated to death.
He slowly raised his hands, dropping the medical files onto the concrete floor.
As Marcus looked down at the papers for a fraction of a second, Victor struck.
Victor kicked a heavy medical tray directly into the security guard’s knees.
The metal tray crashed loudly, causing Marcus to stumble backward and fire a wild shot into the ceiling.
Victor lunged forward and tackled the massive guard to the ground.
"Lily, take Ethan and climb through the chute right now!" Victor roared over the struggle.
Lily did not hesitate.
She pushed the crying baby safely into the narrow tunnel and quickly scrambled up behind him.
Victor landed a brutal punch on Marcus's jaw, knocking the corrupt guard unconscious.
He quickly grabbed the medical files and pulled himself up into the coal chute just as the basement burst into flames.
Victor crawled through the dirt and ash, finally emerging into the cool night air of the mansion's massive garden.
He found Lily sitting on the grass, clutching Ethan tightly as she gasped for fresh air.
But the relief was incredibly short-lived.

Victor looked up and saw that Serena's private helicopter was already landing on the main lawn.
And Serena was sprinting toward the aircraft holding a small, terrifyingly familiar bundle in her arms.
