Chapter 3 - The Smoke in the Vents

Victor threw his massive shoulder against the heavy oak door, but it did not budge an inch.
Serena had locked them inside her hidden medical facility.
Lily held Ethan tightly to her chest, whispering soft words to calm the terrified toddler.
"Victor, who is Julian?" Lily asked, her voice trembling in the dim light.
Victor frantically sorted through the remaining medical files to find an answer.
He discovered a birth certificate hidden at the very back of the folder.
Julian was Serena's biological son, a child she had sworn she never had.
The documents revealed that Julian required a highly experimental and incredibly expensive bone marrow transplant.
Victor suddenly realized why Serena was rushing their extravagant wedding.
She did not love him at all.
She only wanted access to his billionaire fortune to fund an illegal medical procedure for her secret child.
Before Victor could process the massive betrayal, a strange hissing sound filled the room.
Thick, dark smoke began pouring into the basement through the overhead ventilation shafts.
Serena was not just trying to trap them.
She was trying to erase the evidence and bury them alive.
Victor quickly pulled off his expensive suit jacket and shoved it under the door to block the incoming smoke.
"We cannot stay here, we will suffocate in minutes," Victor coughed.
Lily remembered the original blueprints of the mansion from her nanny orientation.
"There is an old coal chute in the back corner behind the shelving units!" Lily shouted.
Victor rushed over and violently pushed the heavy steel shelves out of the way.
A small rusted iron hatch was set high into the concrete wall.
Victor grabbed a heavy wrench from the medical table and smashed the rusted lock.
He pushed the iron door open, revealing a narrow tunnel leading up to the gardens.

But as Victor turned to help Lily and the baby, the basement lights suddenly completely shorted out.
In the pitch-black darkness, they heard the distinct sound of a gun cocking right behind them.
