Chapter 3 - The Hostile Takeover

My heart hammered against my ribs as the cold metal barrel pointed at me.
I had trusted this woman in my home for fifteen long years.
She had helped me raise Luke since he was a little boy.
Missus Higgins stepped further into the room, her hand surprisingly steady.
She told me to drink the rest of the poisoned water on the nightstand immediately.
If I refused, she promised to shoot my son right in front of me.
Luke slowly stood up from the bed, holding his hands in the air.
He spoke to our housekeeper in a soft, completely unbothered tone.
He asked her if Christopher had already transferred the two million dollars to her account.
Missus Higgins narrowed her eyes and demanded to know how he knew about the money.
Luke smiled and tapped a single key on his smart watch.
He informed her that he had intercepted the wire transfer ten minutes ago and rerouted it to a charity.
The housekeeper's face twisted in pure rage as she realized her retirement fund was gone.
She shifted her aim toward Luke and tightened her finger on the trigger.
Before she could fire, a massive figure stepped out from the shadows of my walk-in closet.
It was my private bodyguard, a man Christopher thought he had fired last week.

He struck Missus Higgins in the back of the neck, instantly knocking her unconscious on the floor.
Luke picked up his tablet and told me we were going to the gala right now.
