Chapter 17 - In the Shadows

The heavy darkness provided the absolute perfect cover as the armed mercenaries shouted in deep confusion. I knew exactly who was incredibly brilliant enough to plunge the shipping yard into total blindness. Luke had somehow managed to free his tied hands and access a central computer terminal inside the warehouse. My son was fighting back fiercely from the inside, giving me the ultimate tactical advantage to strike. I slipped quietly past the distracted guards, moving silently between the massive steel shipping containers. I found a side maintenance door and used Agent Carter's stolen master keycard to bypass the electronic lock. The massive interior of the warehouse was illuminated only by the faint glow of the emergency red exit lights. I crept along the high metal catwalk, looking down at the massive factory floor directly below me. Christopher was standing near a makeshift office, screaming furiously at his cartel thugs to fix the power immediately. On a dirty desk next to him sat a small, high tech medical incubator holding the newborn baby. Luke was no longer tied to the steel chair, he had completely vanished into the deep shadows of the room. One of the mercenaries suddenly cried out in pain as a heavy wrench dropped onto his skull from above. Christopher pulled out his silver gun and fired blindly into the dark rafters, completely losing his fragile mind. I took careful aim from the catwalk and shot the weapon directly out of Christopher's trembling right hand. He screamed in sheer agony and fell to his knees, grasping his shattered and heavily bleeding fingers. The remaining heavily armed thugs turned their rifles toward the catwalk, preparing to unleash a hail of bullets. Before they could pull their triggers, a massive industrial forklift engine roared to life on the ground floor. Luke drove the heavy yellow machinery directly into the main concrete support pillars of the old warehouse.
