Chapter 4 - The Safe House

Mia’s face was ghostly pale as she pressed her torn uniform against the bleeding wound.

Claire’s gun must have discharged when the heavy flashlight struck her face.

Harper was crying quietly in the backseat, holding her mother’s trembling hand.

Dominic pushed the armored Mercedes to its absolute limit down the winding mountain roads.

He bypassed all of his official properties and headed toward a hidden cabin in the Catskills.

It was a completely off-the-books safe house that only he and his dead father knew about.

Dominic carried Mia inside and laid her gently on the dusty leather sofa.

He tore open the emergency medical kit and quickly went to work cleaning the bullet wound.

The bullet had passed cleanly through her side, but she was losing blood much too fast.

“Stay awake, Mia,” Dominic ordered, his hands covered in her blood.

Mia smiled weakly, her eyes fluttering as she fought the heavy darkness.

“The ledger is buried under the rose bushes in the east garden,” she whispered.

She explained that she had seen Nathan burying a metal lockbox late one night.

She dug it up, read the horrifying truth, and tried to hide it before Claire caught her.

Dominic stitched the wound closed, his mind racing with absolute, murderous fury.

He promised Mia that he would burn Nathan’s new empire to the ground.

He carried Harper into the small bedroom and tucked the exhausted child under a heavy quilt.

When Dominic walked back into the living room, a strange red dot was tracing across the floor.

It was a laser sight from a high-powered sniper rifle.

Dominic threw himself onto the floor just as the front window violently shattered.
