Chapter 1 - The Poisoned Drops

"The water in the Sound is gray and restless today," Hannah said quietly.
Grant Mercer gripped the carved wooden handles of his chair, letting the sheer impossibility of her recent discovery wash over him in a cold wave.
He needed to know with absolute certainty if he could trust this quiet housekeeper with his life.
"Doctor Hale comes tomorrow morning for my weekly treatment," Grant said without turning his head.
"I need you to steal a sample of the drops he puts directly into my eyes."
Hannah did not ask any useless questions or beg for explanations.
She simply agreed in a hushed tone and walked briskly back into the sprawling mansion.
Thursday morning arrived heavily laden with the familiar, sickening scent of sterile antiseptic.
Vernon Hale walked into the library exactly at seven o'clock, humming a cheerful tune that Grant had heard a hundred times before.
"Tilt your head back for me, Grant," the doctor said with his usual sickeningly warm bedside manner.
Grant held a small piece of highly absorbent medical sponge completely hidden in the palm of his right hand.
As Hale squeezed the liquid from the dropper, Grant brought his hand up rapidly and feigned a violent coughing fit.
He caught the chemical drops perfectly in the sponge before a single drop could touch his damaged eyes.
Hale patted his patient on the shoulder, completely oblivious to the deception, and left the estate ten minutes later.
Hannah rushed into the library the moment the heavy front doors clicked shut.
She carefully took the damp sponge to a makeshift chemistry kit she had assembled in the laundry room.
An agonizing hour later, she returned to the library with trembling hands and a terrified expression.
"This is not a medicinal treatment for inflammation," Hannah whispered.
"It is a highly concentrated synthetic neurotoxin specifically designed to paralyze the optic nerve permanently."
Grant felt a cold, murderous fury ignite deep within his chest.
"Who manufactures this chemical?" Grant asked.
"That is the absolute worst part," Hannah replied with a shaky breath.
May you like
"The chemical signature belongs directly to your own pharmaceutical company."
Grant realized in that horrifying moment that his closest friends had been poisoning him for five long years.
