Chapter 8 - The Coup

Damen did not even flinch, completely ignoring the cold steel barrel of Lorenzo's gun pointed directly at his skull.

He remained perfectly, terrifyingly still, his sharp gray eyes radiating an icy, murderous calm that commanded absolute terror.

Hannah stood up immediately, foolishly placing her own fragile body entirely between the wounded boss and the treacherous underboss.

"Step aside right now, little nurse, this mafia business does not concern you," Lorenzo laughed with extreme arrogance.

"You will absolutely have to shoot me first," Hannah declared loudly, her voice entirely steady despite her wildly racing heart.

Damen gently pushed her behind him with his strong, good arm, absolutely refusing to let her play the tragic martyr.

"You always were entirely too impatient for your own good, Lorenzo," Damen said softly, a dark, violent promise lacing his smooth tone.

Before Lorenzo could confidently pull the trigger, a massive, deadly shadow loomed silently behind him in the open doorway.

Marco struck the arrogant traitor violently across the back of the head with the heavy steel butt of a tactical rifle.

Lorenzo crumpled to the white floor instantly, completely unconscious before his smug face even hit the sterile tiles.

"This trash totally belongs in the back alley, Marco," Damen ordered coldly, not sparing the bleeding traitor another single glance.

Marco dragged the lifeless body roughly out of the room, leaving Hannah trembling violently in the sudden, deafening quiet.

Damen turned his head slowly to her, his harsh expression softening deeply as he reached out to steady her violently shaking shoulders.

"I am incredibly sorry you had to witness the ugly, violent side of my hidden world," he murmured with genuine regret.

"I am honestly just glad you are entirely safe," she confessed quietly, finally leaning her exhausted body into his warm, solid chest.

Later that tense evening, Damen stubbornly insisted on leaving the medical bed, moving his entire operation to the grand, fortified study.

He urgently needed to project absolute, unbroken strength to his remaining soldiers to immediately prevent another violent uprising.

Hannah stood faithfully and quietly by his side, handing him water and secretly checking his fresh bandages for bleeding.

The heavy oak doors opened slowly, and two armed guards dragged a severely beaten David aggressively into the quiet room.

The entirely corrupt cop was sobbing uncontrollably, begging loudly for a generous mercy he absolutely did not deserve.

"You cowardly sold the only woman I truly love to my greatest enemies," Damen stated smoothly, the shocking confession of his deep feelings slipping out effortlessly.

Hannah gasped softly in the shadows, her heart skipping a massive beat at the undeniable, beautiful truth in his dark words.

"It was never actually about the gambling debt, I swear it to you on my life!" David screamed in absolute, unfiltered terror.

Damen raised a dark, skeptical eyebrow, his legendary patience wearing incredibly thin as he casually signaled his lethal guards to execute him.

"Wait, please listen to me, the Volkovs only wanted her because of her dead father!" David blubbered frantically, completely desperate to live.

Hannah froze entirely, the remaining blood draining completely from her exhausted, pale face.

"My father was a simple, dedicated pediatrician who passed away peacefully ten years ago," she whispered in deep, painful confusion.

David shook his bleeding head wildly, spitting a thick glob of blood onto the pristine, expensive marble floor.

"Your beloved father was the emergency surgeon who intentionally let Sophia Moretti die on the operating table for a massive Russian bribe."
