Chapter 5 - The Explosion

"Evacuate absolutely everyone immediately!" Damen roared loudly, his usual terrifying calm completely shattering into pure panic.
Hannah did not waste a single, precious second, sprinting desperately toward the crowded pediatric wing at the end of the hall.
She scooped a frightened, crying toddler into one arm and forcefully ushered two heavily pregnant women toward the emergency fire exit.
Damen was right beside her the entire time, physically kicking open jammed metal doors and powerfully directing the chaotic, screaming crowd.
They finally burst through the heavy back alley doors just as the digital timer supposedly hit zero.
The massive explosion was completely deafening, sending a colossal shockwave of blistering heat and sound that lifted Hannah entirely off her feet.
Damen caught her violently mid-air, wrapping his large body securely around hers as they crashed hard onto the wet, filthy asphalt.
Burning debris rained down heavily all around them, instantly shattering the glass windows of dozens of nearby parked cars.
Coughing fiercely through the thick, toxic black smoke, Hannah looked up desperately at the brave man shielding her from the fire.
Damen's sharp cheek was bleeding freely, but his intense gray eyes frantically searched her pale face for any signs of serious injury.
"Are you badly hurt?" he demanded instantly, his deep voice rough with an overwhelming emotion he could no longer hide.
"I am okay," she choked out weakly, staring in pure, unfiltered horror at the towering, flaming ruins of her beloved clinic.
"They just destroyed my entire life's work," she whispered brokenly, her resilient spirit finally shattering into a million tiny pieces.
Damen gently helped her to her shaking feet, his strong jaw firmly set in a terrifying expression of absolute, calculated vengeance.
"I swear I will rebuild it from the ground up, twice as large and entirely impenetrable," he promised her with deadly seriousness.
Hannah looked closely at him, fully realizing for the very first time just how much immense power this dangerous man truly wielded.
They returned to the quiet penthouse in heavy silence, the brutal reality of the escalating mob war crashing violently down upon them.
That dark night, Hannah could not sleep at all, pacing the luxurious living room endlessly in her borrowed, oversized clothes.
Damen walked in quietly from the shadows, handing her a warm, comforting mug of herbal tea without saying a single word.
Their cold fingers brushed gently again, but this time, neither of them pulled quickly away from the lingering, electric contact.
"Why are you risking your entire empire for a complete stranger?" she finally asked him in a soft, vulnerable whisper.
Damen looked painfully away, the dark ghosts of his tragic past swirling violently in his storm-gray eyes.
Before he could properly answer her deeply personal question, Hannah's old, cracked cell phone began to ring loudly on the glass coffee table.
The bright caller ID violently flashed a familiar name she had desperately prayed she would never see again.
She answered the device with wildly trembling fingers, instinctively putting the call on speakerphone for Damen to hear.

"I have your favorite coworker, Rebecca, tied tightly to a wooden chair right now," David's cruel, gloating voice taunted loudly through the crackling speaker.
"Come entirely alone to the abandoned navy pier in exactly one hour, or the sweet little nurse gets a bullet straight in her brain."
