Chapter 2 - The Unseen Threat

Damen stepped in front of Hannah instantly, shielding her fragile body entirely with his own massive frame.
He drew a sleek black firearm from inside his expensive coat with a terrifying, practiced speed that chilled her blood.
"Stay quietly behind me," he ordered in a dark whisper that left absolutely no room for debate.
Hannah could barely breathe as she watched him clear the tiny apartment with lethal, military precision.
The inside of her beloved home had been completely and systematically destroyed.
Her expensive nursing textbooks were shredded, the cushions of her thrift-store sofa were sliced open, and her meager belongings were scattered everywhere.
Damen lowered his dark weapon only when he was absolutely certain the dangerous intruder was gone.
He turned slowly to face her, his strong jaw locked in a furious, tight line of barely suppressed rage.
"Who exactly did this to your home?" he demanded softly.
Hannah shook her head rapidly, tears of pure frustration finally spilling over her dark eyelashes.
"I do not know who would do this," she lied, her trembling, terrified voice betraying her instantly.
Damen stepped intimately closer, gently lifting her chin so she was completely forced to look directly into his stormy gray eyes.
"You are lying to me, Hannah," he stated softly, without any trace of judgment.
He reached gently for her arm, carefully pushing up the sleeve of her oversized sweater just enough to reveal the dark, ugly bruises.
"Did the exact same man who left these violent marks do this to your sanctuary?"
A broken sob escaped her tight throat as the terrifying reality of her isolated situation finally crushed her spirit.
It was David, her highly abusive ex-boyfriend, a corrupt city cop who had recently spiraled into massive underground gambling debts.
He had viciously sworn he would make her pay for finally finding the courage to walk away from his abuse.
"He is a decorated police officer," Hannah whispered, the heavy confession tasting like bitter ash in her mouth.
"He promised me that no one would ever believe a simple nurse if I tried to report him."
A terrifying, incredibly cold smile slowly spread across Damen's handsome face.
It was the exact smile of an apex predator who had just located his chosen prey.
"He is absolutely right, the city police will not help you," Damen agreed quietly.
"But I am not the police."
He pulled his encrypted cell phone from his pocket and pressed a single, glowing button.
"Marco, bring the car around to the back alley and immediately send a specialized cleanup crew to this address."
Hannah stared at him in pure, unfiltered shock.
"What are you doing?" she asked, clutching her torn canvas bag tightly to her chest.
"You are coming to live with me immediately," he declared simply, sealing her fate.
Before she could form a protest, Marco rushed frantically through the broken doorway with a grim, panicked expression.

"Boss, we have a truly massive problem," the loyal driver announced, completely ignoring the ruined living room.
"That corrupt cop who harassed her owes three million dollars to the Volkov syndicate, and he just gave them her name as collateral."
