Chapter 6 - The Trap

The awful line went completely dead, leaving a suffocating, heavy silence in the luxurious, dimly lit penthouse.
Hannah stared blankly at the dark screen of her phone, her exhausted mind racing with sheer, unfiltered terror.
"I absolutely have to go to her," she whispered frantically, already moving quickly toward the front door to grab her wet coat.
Damen stepped smoothly in front of her, entirely blocking her determined path with his massive, intimidating frame.
"You are definitely not walking blindly into a guaranteed suicide mission," he stated firmly, his tone leaving absolutely no room for any argument.
"She is entirely innocent, Damen, she only got kidnapped because she kindly helped me at the hospital!" Hannah cried out in utter desperation.
"We are going together, and we are handling this my way," he decided coldly, pulling a heavy secondary weapon from his hidden wall safe.
They sped dangerously through the dark, rain-slicked streets of Chicago in Marco's heavily armored black sedan.
The old navy pier was completely desolate, serving as an eerie, abandoned graveyard of rusting shipping containers and broken floodlights.
Damen forced Hannah to stay closely behind his broad back as they navigated the dark maze of giant metal boxes.
They finally found the terrified Rebecca tied securely to a wooden chair right in the center of an empty, rain-swept clearing.
She was sobbing quietly into her gag, her swollen face heavily bruised and her dark eyes wide with unimaginable, paralyzing fear.
David stepped confidently out from the deep shadows, arrogantly twirling a stolen police-issue revolver around his index finger.
"I see you actually brought your new mobster boyfriend to protect you," David sneered loudly, his foul breath reeking strongly of cheap alcohol.
"Let her go immediately, David, this fight is entirely between you and me," Hannah pleaded desperately, stepping bravely out from behind Damen.
David laughed incredibly harshly, raising the heavy weapon and aiming it directly at Hannah's beating chest.
"The ruthless Volkovs promised my massive debt is completely cleared the exact second you are dead," he snarled viciously.
Everything happened next in a totally chaotic blur of violent motion and deafening, explosive noise.
David pulled the heavy trigger with a sickening, triumphant smirk.

Damen violently shoved Hannah to the wet ground, throwing his own muscular body directly into the deadly path of the speeding bullet.
A terrifying, wet impact echoed loudly through the abandoned clearing as Damen collapsed heavily onto the hard concrete.
