Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

Hannah stared at Rebecca with a mix of profound gratitude and sheer, overwhelming panic.

Before the strict nurse could offer another scolding about self-care, the hospital room door swung completely open.

Damen Moretti stepped inside, carrying an undeniable aura of dangerous authority that immediately silenced the room.

He wore a fresh, perfectly tailored black suit, though his storm-gray eyes still carried the fierce intensity from the rain-soaked sidewalk.

"The doctor has officially discharged you," Damen said, his voice a low, smooth rumble that left absolutely no room for negotiation.

Hannah blinked in deep confusion, instinctively pulling the thin hospital blanket up to her chin for comfort.

"I have not even seen a doctor yet," she protested, her voice wavering slightly under his intense gaze.

"You have seen the chief of medicine now, and your hospital bill is fully settled," he replied without missing a single beat.

Rebecca wisely stepped backward toward the door, clearly sensing the lethal energy radiating from the tall, mysterious stranger.

"You cannot just use your immense wealth to buy my medical discharge," Hannah argued, swinging her bare legs stubbornly over the side of the hospital bed.

"I did not buy your discharge, I merely expedited the inevitable bureaucracy," Damen countered with smooth, arrogant confidence.

He held out her worn canvas bag, the heavy strap resting entirely too easily in his massive, scarred hand.

"My personal driver is waiting downstairs right now to take you home safely."

Hannah desperately wanted to refuse his charity, but the lingering exhaustion buried deep in her bones made her hesitate.

She reached out and accepted the heavy bag, her trembling fingers accidentally brushing against his warm skin.

A strange, electric shock traveled violently up her arm, making her breath catch painfully in her throat.

Damen clearly noticed her physical reaction, but he kept his handsome features locked into a completely unreadable mask.

They walked side by side down the brightly lit hospital corridor and to the waiting black sedan in absolute silence.

The freezing rain from yesterday had finally stopped, leaving the gritty Chicago streets slick and gleaming under the pale morning sun.

Marco, the stoic driver, held the luxury car door open, offering Hannah a polite, surprisingly gentle nod of respect.

The luxurious ride to her modest, run-down apartment complex in the rough part of town was surprisingly quick.

Hannah felt a heavy, cold knot forming deep in her stomach as the sleek vehicle pulled up to her brick building.

Something felt terribly, fundamentally wrong about the eerie silence of her residential hallway.

"Thank you for the safe ride, Mister Moretti," she said softly, quickly reaching for the silver door handle.

"My name is Damen," he corrected her softly, stepping out of the car to follow her closely up the concrete stairs.

"You really do not need to walk me to my door," she insisted, her heart suddenly pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Damen entirely ignored her nervous protests, his sharp, predatory eyes scanning the shadowed corners of her floor.

They turned the final, dimly lit corner of the corridor, and Hannah froze completely in her tracks.

Her modest apartment door was standing wide open, swinging slightly on a broken metal hinge.

The heavy steel deadbolt had been violently shattered from the outside, leaving sharp, splintered wood scattered tragically across her little welcome mat.
