Chapter 9 - The Decryption Key

The echoing, mechanical voice of Julian counting down from sixty seconds filled the damp, dark mining tunnel.

Adrienne felt a sickening wave of despair wash over him as he realized they were completely trapped in a massive, underground tomb.

He looked desperately around the reinforced concrete room, searching frantically for any possible secondary exit or structural weakness.

Daniel pounded his bloody fists aggressively against the heavy steel blast doors, knowing it was entirely useless against inches of solid metal.

Simone stood perfectly still in the center of the room, her eyes closed tightly as she focused completely on her eidetic memory.

She suddenly opened her eyes and sprinted toward a rusted, ancient electrical junction box mounted on the far wall.

She ripped the metal cover completely off, revealing a tangled, chaotic mess of old wires and a modern, blinking digital receiver.

Simone loudly announced that Julian was using a remote radio frequency to trigger the C4 detonators wired throughout the mine.

She stated that if they could successfully scramble the specific frequency, the bombs would absolutely fail to detonate.

Adrienne rushed to her side, asking frantically if she knew how to bypass a highly advanced military detonator in less than forty seconds.

Simone calmly replied that Julian always used the exact same encryption algorithms for his security systems ten years ago.

She had meticulously studied the old family ledgers when she first took the job, memorizing every single outdated security protocol.

Daniel stepped back, completely stunned that an executive secretary was actively attempting to defuse a massive bomb.

Simone’s fingers flew rapidly over the delicate wires, crossing connections with incredible, practiced precision.

Julian’s arrogant voice continued to echo over the loudspeakers, happily counting down the final twenty seconds of their lives.

Adrienne stood perfectly close to Simone, completely ignoring the countdown and entirely mesmerized by her intense, brilliant focus.

He realized in that terrifying moment that he was absolutely, hopelessly in love with the incredible woman standing beside him.

He gently placed his hand on her shoulder and softly told her that no matter what happened next, she was the best thing in his entire life.

Simone paused for a tiny fraction of a second, offering him a beautiful, tear-filled smile before returning to the wires.

She twisted the final two wires completely together just as Julian gleefully shouted the final number over the speaker.

Three agonizing, terrifying seconds of absolute, dead silence passed in the cold, damp mining tunnel.

The massive, fiery explosion that was supposed to bury them completely alive absolutely never happened.

Simone let out a massive, shuddering breath and collapsed weakly against Adrienne’s strong chest.

Adrienne wrapped his arms securely around her, burying his face in her dusty, ruined curls and breathing in her scent.

Daniel let out a loud, relieved laugh, completely amazed that they had actually survived the impossible death trap.

Julian’s angry, confused voice suddenly crackled over the intercom, screaming furiously at his men to breach the heavy doors manually.

Adrienne knew they only had a few minutes before Julian’s mercenaries burned through the thick steel with cutting torches.

He looked at Simone and stated that it was finally time to use the master decryption password she had memorized.

He pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, which miraculously still possessed a weak, single bar of signal.

He connected the phone to the mine’s ancient hardline communication terminal to boost the outgoing transmission power.

Adrienne told Simone to input the master password and completely drain every single offshore account Julian had spent a decade building.

Simone typed rapidly on the small digital screen, entering the complex, sixty-character alphanumeric code perfectly from memory.

She executed the final command, instantly transferring billions of dollars from Julian’s illegal accounts directly into untraceable international charities.

Adrienne smiled wickedly and used the intercom system to broadcast a message directly to Julian’s mercenaries outside.

He loudly announced that Julian was now completely, utterly broke and could not possibly pay them for their services tonight.

He offered every single mercenary a massive, instant cash bounty if they immediately turned their weapons on their former boss.

The sound of intense, chaotic arguing quickly erupted on the other side of the heavy steel doors.

Julian screamed furiously at his men, desperately trying to maintain control of his rapidly dissolving authority.

Suddenly, a massive, deafening burst of heavy automatic gunfire echoed loudly from the other side of the blast doors.

A tense, agonizing silence fell over the tunnel before the heavy steel doors slowly began to slide open.

Adrienne, Simone, and Daniel raised their weapons simultaneously, entirely prepared for one final, bloody standoff.

Instead of mercenaries, a completely battered, bleeding Julian was violently thrown onto the concrete floor at their feet.

Standing directly behind him were dozens of heavily armed federal tactical agents, completely surrounding the surrendered mercenaries.

The leader of the federal team stepped forward, completely ignoring Adrienne and looking directly at Daniel Hayes.

Daniel lowered his weapon and smiled, announcing that his backup had finally decided to show up to the party.
