Chapter 7 - The Enemy of My Enemy

Adrienne stared in sheer disbelief at the battered face of Daniel Hayes kneeling in the dirt.

Victor Rossi stood confidently behind the federal agent, pressing the barrel of a heavy revolver directly against his skull.

Victor laughed cruelly into the darkness, loudly announcing that the FBI had completely failed to protect their golden boy.

He stated that he had intercepted the federal convoy transferring Daniel after the disastrous penthouse raid.

Victor shouted that he was willing to make a very lucrative, highly beneficial trade right now.

If Adrienne surrendered the encrypted financial ledger, Victor would hand over the federal agent and let Simone walk away freely.

Adrienne remained perfectly hidden inside the dark cave, his mind racing through a dozen impossible tactical scenarios.

He knew Victor was a completely ruthless liar who would undoubtedly slaughter them all the second he got what he wanted.

Simone leaned close to Adrienne's ear, her voice trembling but filled with absolute, determined focus.

She whispered that she had secretly memorized the master decryption password for the entire syndicate network.

Adrienne looked at her in absolute shock, realizing she held the literal keys to his entire empire in her brilliant mind.

Simone explained that she did it months ago to ensure she always had leverage if he ever tried to fire her.

Adrienne almost laughed at the sheer audacity and incredible brilliance of the woman he had completely ignored for years.

He whispered back that they were going to use that vital information to completely destroy Victor right now.

Adrienne called out to Victor from the darkness, projecting his voice to make it sound like it was coming from further down the ridge.

He confidently shouted that Victor was completely wasting his time because the physical ledger was entirely destroyed in the crash.

Victor’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, murderous rage.

Adrienne loudly declared that the only way to access the funds was through a verbal decryption key that only he possessed.

He demanded that Victor drop his weapon and step away from the agent if he ever wanted to see a single dime.

Victor hesitated, his overwhelming greed visibly warring with his desire for absolute, bloody revenge.

He slowly lowered his revolver from Daniel’s head and took one hesitant step forward into the clearing.

Adrienne did not wait for Victor to make another move or change his treacherous mind.

He quickly tossed a heavy rock far to the right, causing a loud, distracting rustle in the thick bushes.

Victor and his four heavily armed assassins instantly turned and fired wildly toward the false noise.

Adrienne used the perfect distraction to burst out of the cave, sprinting aggressively toward the clearing.

He fired his suppressed handgun with lethal, pinpoint precision, dropping two of the assassins instantly.

Simone followed right behind him, incredibly raising her own weapon and firing blindly to provide necessary covering fire.

Victor cursed loudly and dove behind a massive tree, completely abandoning the kneeling federal agent.

Adrienne slid aggressively across the dirt, grabbing Daniel by his bound collar and dragging him violently into a shallow ditch.

He used his combat knife to quickly slice the heavy zip-ties binding Daniel’s bruised and bleeding wrists.

Daniel gasped for air, looking at the mafia boss with a mixture of absolute confusion and reluctant gratitude.

Adrienne shoved a spare handgun into Daniel’s chest and ordered him to fight for his life if he wanted to survive.

The three of them were pinned down in the muddy ditch as Victor’s remaining men opened heavy, suppressive fire.

Bullets shredded the bark of the trees directly above their heads, showering them with sharp, dangerous splinters.

Daniel yelled over the deafening gunfire, asking Adrienne why a ruthless mafia boss would ever risk his life to save a federal agent.

Adrienne looked directly at Simone, who was reloading her weapon with surprisingly calm, shaking hands.

He stated firmly that he did it because the incredible woman beside him asked him not to become a murderer tonight.

Daniel stared at Simone, finally realizing the profound, undeniable connection that existed between the two of them.

Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the forest floor directly behind Victor's position.

Bright orange flames erupted into the night sky, completely illuminating the dark, chaotic battlefield.

Adrienne looked up in absolute shock, wondering who the hell was throwing military-grade explosives in the middle of a forest.

A highly specialized, heavily armored tactical team emerged from the smoke, wearing completely unmarked black uniforms.

They systematically and ruthlessly gunned down Victor's remaining men in a matter of seconds.

The leader of the unknown strike team stepped forward, lowering his heavy assault rifle and removing his tactical helmet.

Adrienne’s blood ran completely freezing cold as he recognized the smiling face of the man who supposedly died ten years ago.

It was his older brother, Julian Romano, and he looked absolutely, perfectly alive.
