Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Julian Romano stood tall amidst the burning trees, a chilling, familiar smile plastered across his face.

Adrienne stared at his older brother in absolute, paralyzing disbelief, completely ignoring the smoke filling his lungs.

He had personally buried Julian ten years ago after a massive, catastrophic car explosion orchestrated by a rival family.

Julian slowly stepped forward, casually stepping over the lifeless body of a Chicago syndicate assassin.

He loudly declared that it was incredibly good to finally see his little brother after a decade of hiding in the shadows.

Adrienne slowly raised his weapon, aiming it directly at the chest of the ghost standing before him.

He demanded to know how Julian was still alive and why he had completely abandoned the family for ten years.

Julian laughed smoothly, explaining that faking his own death was the only way to escape a massive federal indictment.

He revealed that he had spent the last decade building a highly secret, incredibly powerful private military contracting firm overseas.

Julian stated that he had returned tonight because he heard Adrienne was completely losing control of their father's empire.

He pointed a mocking finger at Daniel Hayes, deeply disgusted that a federal agent was sitting in Adrienne's protective ditch.

Julian declared that Adrienne had grown weak, soft, and completely unworthy of leading the powerful Romano syndicate.

He announced his absolute intention to violently reclaim his rightful position as the head of the family tonight.

Simone tightened her grip on her handgun, realizing this new threat was vastly more dangerous than Victor ever was.

She boldly stood up from the muddy ditch, placing herself directly between Adrienne and his psychotic older brother.

She stared Julian dead in the eyes and firmly stated that Adrienne was a far better leader than a coward who faked his death.

Julian’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated fury directed at the executive secretary.

He casually raised his heavy assault rifle and aimed it directly at Simone's chest without a single second of hesitation.

Adrienne roared in absolute, primal rage and violently shoved Simone safely to the ground just as Julian pulled the trigger.

The bullet grazed Adrienne’s left shoulder, sending a sharp, agonizing burst of pain completely through his entire body.

He ignored the bleeding wound and returned fire aggressively, forcing Julian and his elite mercenaries to seek heavy cover.

Daniel immediately joined the chaotic firefight, providing expert tactical covering fire to keep the mercenaries pinned down.

Adrienne grabbed Simone and dragged her rapidly toward the dense, darker section of the thick forest to regroup.

He pressed his hand tightly against his bleeding shoulder, gritting his teeth against the intense, burning pain.

Simone ripped a long strip of fabric from her ruined red dress and expertly tied a tight tourniquet around his arm.

Her hands were covered in his warm blood, but her beautiful eyes were filled with absolute, fierce determination.

She whispered that they needed to reach the old, abandoned mining facility located just two miles north of their position.

She had researched the area meticulously when purchasing the secret safehouse and knew the mines possessed a heavy blast door.

Adrienne nodded, completely amazed by her brilliant tactical foresight in the middle of a deadly warzone.

He turned to Daniel and offered a temporary, highly dangerous truce until they could completely neutralize Julian’s forces.

Daniel reluctantly agreed, knowing his federal badge meant absolutely nothing to a rogue military contractor.

The three of them moved silently through the dark, freezing woods, actively hunting the men who were hunting them.

They utilized expert guerrilla tactics, picking off two of Julian’s heavily armored mercenaries who strayed too far from the group.

They finally reached the rusted chain-link fence surrounding the massive, abandoned mining facility.

Adrienne kicked open the heavy iron gate, and they rushed into the dark, echoing tunnels of the main shaft.

They found the massive steel blast doors and worked frantically together to close them against the encroaching enemy.

Just as the heavy doors clicked securely into place, Julian’s voice echoed loudly through the ventilation system above them.

Julian laughed hysterically, proudly announcing that he had herded them exactly where he wanted them to go.

He cheerfully revealed that the entire mining facility was completely rigged with massive amounts of C4 explosives.

Julian happily started a slow, agonizing sixty-second countdown over the loudspeaker, promising to bury them all alive.
