Chapter 6 - The Forest Ambush

Adrienne slammed the heavy sedan into reverse the very instant he recognized the Chicago syndicate’s crest.

The tires shrieked violently against the wet asphalt as he desperately tried to back away from the deadly blockade.

The four heavily armed assassins did not hesitate for a single second to unleash absolute hell.

A relentless barrage of suppressed automatic gunfire shattered the windshield, showering Adrienne and Simone in sharp, dangerous glass.

Adrienne threw his right arm forcefully across Simone’s body, shoving her head firmly down below the dashboard.

He expertly spun the steering wheel, throwing the vehicle into a wild, aggressive J-turn in the middle of the narrow road.

The heavy sedan slammed brutally into the guardrail, crumpling the back bumper but successfully changing their direction.

Adrienne slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, roaring back down the dark, winding mountain road they had just traveled.

He yelled at Simone to stay completely down as bullets continued to tear through the trunk of the car.

Simone covered her ears, completely terrified but surprisingly calm under the immense, deadly pressure.

She shouted over the engine noise, asking how the rival syndicate could possibly know they were coming this way.

Adrienne gritted his teeth, his mind racing to process the terrifying implications of her logical question.

The Chicago syndicate had absolutely no reason to be waiting on a secret, heavily encrypted escape route.

The only possible explanation was that Marcus had not only sold him out to the FBI, but also to his greatest enemies.

Adrienne knew the gray sedan was severely damaged and leaking fluid rapidly onto the dark road.

He told Simone they needed to abandon the vehicle before it completely died and left them sitting ducks.

He aggressively swerved the car off the paved road, crashing violently through the thick brush and into the dense, dark forest.

The car violently jolted over rocks and massive roots before finally slamming hard into a large oak tree.

The airbags instantly deployed, filling the cabin with a thick, choking white powder and the strong smell of burning rubber.

Adrienne quickly punctured his airbag with his combat knife and kicked his jammed door completely open.

He rushed around to the passenger side, pulling a coughing, disoriented Simone out of the smoking wreckage.

He grabbed a heavy tactical bag from the trunk and handed Simone a small, reliable handgun.

He ordered her to keep the safety off and absolutely shoot anything that moved in the dark woods.

They sprinted aggressively into the thick, freezing forest, leaving the smoking decoy car far behind them.

The cold night air bit harshly into their lungs as they navigated the treacherous, uneven terrain in complete darkness.

Adrienne could hear the heavy, thudding footsteps of the Chicago assassins entering the woods less than a mile behind them.

They needed to find defensible high ground immediately or they would be completely surrounded and slaughtered.

Adrienne led Simone up a steep, rocky embankment, his strong hand gripping hers tightly to keep her from slipping.

They finally reached a small, hidden cave formation near the very top of the massive ridge.

Adrienne pushed Simone safely inside and quickly arranged heavy rocks and thick branches to camouflage the entrance.

He knelt beside her in the dark, checking his weapons and calculating their extremely slim chances of survival.

Simone was shivering uncontrollably in her torn red dress, her hands trembling violently as she gripped the cold gun.

Adrienne took off his expensive tuxedo jacket and wrapped it warmly around her freezing, shaking shoulders.

He looked deeply into her eyes, apologizing sincerely for dragging her into this terrifying, deadly nightmare.

Simone looked back at him, her fear slowly morphing into a fierce, undeniable determination.

She stated clearly that she was not just his secretary anymore, and she was not going to die hiding in a cave.

Adrienne offered a small, genuinely impressed smile, finally seeing the true strength she possessed.

Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of a dry branch snapping echoed loudly just outside the cave entrance.

Adrienne instantly raised his weapon, holding his breath and preparing for a massive, bloody firefight in the dark.

A deep, commanding voice called out from the shadows, stating that they were completely surrounded and should surrender immediately.

Adrienne recognized the arrogant voice instantly; it belonged to Victor Rossi, the ruthless leader of the Chicago syndicate.

Victor laughed coldly and announced that he had a very special, unexpected guest who wanted to say hello.

A bright tactical flashlight suddenly pierced the darkness, illuminating a bound and beaten man kneeling in the dirt.

Adrienne gasped in absolute shock when he saw the battered face of Daniel Hayes, the undercover federal agent.
