Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Midnight Suit

The crystal champagne glass stopped halfway to Adrienne’s lips, perfectly frozen in mid-air.

Around him, nearly eighty wealthy guests filled the luxurious Manhattan penthouse with polished laughter and soft jazz music.

Conversations measured in tens of millions of dollars echoed warmly against the twenty-foot windows overlooking the glittering city.

He absolutely should have been listening to the influential real estate executive speaking right beside him.

Instead, his dark eyes remained entirely fixed on the polished steel doors of the private elevator.

Simone Carter stood there wearing a deep, elegant red dress with her natural curls falling softly around her shoulders.

There was no digital tablet tucked neatly beneath her arm and no company phone tightly gripped in her hand.

For the first time in five years, she had entered his massive world without carrying the immense responsibility for it.

However, beside her stood a tall, confident man wearing a tailored midnight blue suit that Adrienne had never seen before.

The stranger leaned closely toward Simone and whispered something that Adrienne could not possibly hear over the jazz quartet.

Simone tilted her head back and laughed.

Adrienne completely froze.

He knew that her laugh existed, but he simply could not remember ever hearing it sound quite like that.

At the office, Simone smiled professionally when demanding clients arrived early and politely when he ruined her carefully arranged schedules.

This beautiful laughter was entirely different, completely warm, unprotected, and remarkably real.

The real estate executive beside him cleared his throat and waited expectantly.

Adrienne slowly lowered his expensive glass and excused himself without another word.

He crossed the massive room quickly before he even had the chance to decide why he was doing it.

Guests greeted him warmly as he passed, but their congratulatory words blurred uselessly beneath the music.

Simone had already reached the center of the grand room when she noticed him rapidly approaching.

For the smallest instant, genuine surprise crossed her elegant face before her familiar, flawless composure returned.

She greeted him politely as Mr. Romano, using the exact same calm voice he heard every weekday at seven in the morning.

Yet tonight, standing in a beautiful red dress, the formal title sounded strangely out of place.

Adrienne’s intense gaze slowly moved from her face to the confident man standing comfortably by her side.

Simone smoothly introduced the tall stranger as Daniel Hayes.

Adrienne’s voice was completely flat as he offered his hand and introduced himself.

Daniel shook his hand firmly and easily wished him a happy birthday.

Adrienne thanked him automatically, his mind racing to understand the dynamic between them.

Daniel looked affectionately toward Simone and stated that she deserved most of the credit for planning the entire incredible party.

Adrienne glanced around at the imported flowers, the talented musicians, the professional catering staff, and the perfect lighting.

Simone had meticulously selected everything, and he had simply approved it without ever asking how many late nights it cost her.

He stated dryly that she usually did handle everything perfectly.

Simone’s eyes met his for a brief moment, and something entirely unreadable passed quickly through them.

A wealthy woman covered in expensive diamonds suddenly approached and asked Simone how she knew Adrienne.

Adrienne quickly answered that she was his secretary before Simone could even open her mouth.

The words came naturally because they had always been factually accurate for the last five years.

But tonight, standing beside the attentive Daniel, Simone seemed to make the title sound painfully incomplete.

Simone gently corrected him, stating that she was the executive secretary.

Daniel looked at her with quiet, undeniable pride and added that she was exceptionally good at what she did.

Adrienne felt an unexpected, burning irritation that he could not logically explain to himself.

This confident stranger had known Simone for what, a few months, or perhaps even longer?

Adrienne suddenly realized with a sickening jolt that he had absolutely no idea about her personal life.

Daniel casually placed a fresh glass of sparkling water directly into Simone’s waiting hand.

He smiled and told her he specifically remembered that she did not like champagne.

Adrienne stared blankly at the clear glass in her hand as Daniel guided her smoothly toward the jazz quartet.

After five years, nearly thirteen hundred mornings, and thousands of private meetings, he knew exactly how she worked.

He knew she could reorganize an impossible travel schedule in ten minutes and handle his darkest moods flawlessly.

He did not know she disliked champagne.

As Adrienne watched them walk away, his personal phone vibrated violently in his tuxedo pocket with an urgent, encrypted message.

He pulled it out and read a single sentence from his head of security that made his blood run completely cold: "Daniel Hayes is an undercover federal agent."
