Chapter 5 - The Escape Route

The deafening explosion rattled the heavy oak doors of the private office, sending a thick cloud of dust raining down.

Adrienne knew the FBI tactical team would breach the locked office door in less than thirty seconds.

He grabbed Simone tightly by the wrist and pulled her urgently toward the back wall of the room.

Simone was trembling violently, her elegant red dress covered in dust and her perfectly styled hair completely ruined.

Adrienne told her to stay calm and focus entirely on following his exact instructions if they wanted to survive.

He pushed a specific sequence of books on his massive bookshelf, activating a hidden, silent mechanical switch.

The heavy wooden bookshelf slowly swung open, revealing a dark, narrow emergency maintenance shaft.

Adrienne shoved Simone gently inside and quickly followed her, pulling the heavy shelf securely shut behind them.

Just as the hidden door clicked completely into place, they heard the heavy office doors violently burst open.

Dozens of heavily armed tactical agents flooded the room, shouting aggressive commands in the dim red lighting.

Adrienne placed a finger over his lips, signaling Simone to remain absolutely, perfectly silent in the cramped space.

They stood pressed tightly together in the dark, narrow shaft, their bodies touching in the freezing cold air.

Adrienne could actually hear Simone’s heart pounding frantically in her chest, echoing loudly in the absolute silence.

He realized in that intense, terrifying moment how incredibly brave she had been to protect him from a federal agent.

He carefully reached out and took her trembling hand, giving it a firm, reassuring squeeze in the complete darkness.

Simone squeezed back tightly, seeking desperate comfort from the terrifying mafia boss she had worked for all these years.

Adrienne activated a small flashlight and led her quickly down the steep, narrow spiral staircase built into the walls.

They descended thirty floors in complete silence, emerging into the massive, dimly lit underground parking garage.

Adrienne’s private fleet of luxury vehicles was parked neatly in a row, but he knew they were all heavily bugged by now.

He bypassed his expensive cars and walked toward a dusty, unassuming gray sedan parked in the far corner.

It was an untraceable, off-the-books escape vehicle he kept specifically for catastrophic emergencies exactly like this.

He unlocked the car, and they quickly climbed inside, the heavy doors shutting with a solid, comforting thud.

Adrienne started the engine, ensuring the headlights remained completely off as he slowly navigated toward the exit ramp.

He told Simone they needed to get entirely out of the city before the FBI established a complete perimeter lockdown.

Simone looked at him with wide, terrified eyes and asked exactly where they were supposed to go.

Adrienne replied grimly that they were going to his heavily fortified, secret safehouse deep in the upstate mountains.

He accelerated the gray sedan up the ramp, bursting out into the cold, chaotic Manhattan night.

Police sirens wailed aggressively in every direction, flashing red and blue lights illuminating the dark city streets.

Adrienne expertly wove through the heavy traffic, avoiding main avenues and utilizing narrow, forgotten alleyways.

He successfully managed to cross the bridge out of the city just minutes before the massive police barricades were erected.

They drove in tense silence for two grueling hours, the adrenaline slowly wearing off and leaving absolute exhaustion behind.

Simone stared blankly out the passenger window, clutching her ruined red dress and shivering in the cold air.

Adrienne finally broke the long silence, his voice unusually soft and lacking his typical, commanding authority.

He thanked her sincerely for saving his life back in the office, acknowledging her incredible, undeniable bravery.

Simone turned to look at him, her beautiful eyes filled with a mixture of fear, exhaustion, and intense anger.

She stated firmly that she did not save him because she supported his violent, illegal criminal empire.

She saved him because she refused to let a man she cared deeply about be murdered right in front of her.

Adrienne felt a powerful, undeniable warmth spread through his chest at her bold, honest confession.

He finally realized how completely blind he had been to the incredible, loyal woman standing right beside him for five years.

Before he could respond, a massive black SUV suddenly pulled aggressively out of a hidden side road, completely blocking their path.

The heavy SUV turned on blinding high beams, and four men stepped out carrying suppressed automatic rifles.

Adrienne slammed on the brakes, realizing the men blocking the road were not federal agents at all.

They were heavily armed assassins wearing the distinct, unmistakable crest of the rival Chicago syndicate.
