Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

Simone’s desperate, panicked whisper echoed like a gunshot in the tense space between them.
Adrienne froze completely, his dark eyes locked intensely on his executive secretary.
She knew.
She absolutely knew that her charming companion was wearing a wire and walking directly into a deadly trap.
Daniel’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second as he gently pulled his arm away from her trembling grasp.
He quickly masked his surprise with a forced laugh and told Simone she was worrying too much about a simple business meeting.
Adrienne did not laugh.
He stared at Simone, seeing the sheer terror radiating clearly in her usually composed, beautiful eyes.
The realization that she had actively tried to protect a federal agent from him felt like a physical blow to his chest.
Adrienne gestured coldly toward the hallway and ordered Daniel to follow him to the office right now.
He also instructed Simone to join them, his voice leaving absolutely no room for negotiation or argument.
The three of them walked silently through the crowded party, the heavy tension suffocating them with every step.
Marcus opened the heavy oak door of the office and quickly stepped inside, locking it securely behind them.
The sound of the jazz quartet was instantly completely muted, replaced by a terrifying, deadly silence.
Adrienne walked behind his massive mahogany desk and did not offer either of them a seat.
He looked directly at Daniel and asked him to drop the ridiculous business facade immediately.
Daniel maintained his confident posture, asking Adrienne why he was suddenly being so incredibly hostile.
Adrienne smoothly pulled a heavy, suppressed silver handgun from his desk drawer and placed it directly on the polished wood.
Simone gasped loudly and took a frightened step backward, her hands covering her mouth in pure shock.
Adrienne stated coldly that he knew Daniel was an undercover FBI operative sent to destroy his entire family legacy.
Daniel’s eyes darted quickly toward Marcus, calculating his very slim chances of escaping the locked room alive.
Adrienne turned his intense, furious gaze directly onto Simone.
He demanded to know exactly how long she had been feeding federal agents his private, encrypted schedules.
Simone shook her head violently, tears instantly welling up in her terrified eyes.
She swore on her life that she had never given Daniel any classified information about Romano Holdings.
She confessed that Daniel had approached her months ago, pretending to be a simple, charming accountant.
She had only discovered his true identity yesterday when she accidentally saw his federal badge hidden in his jacket.
Adrienne listened to her desperate explanation, desperately wanting to believe the woman who had organized his entire life for five years.
Daniel suddenly interrupted, his voice dropping the charming act and becoming completely cold and authoritative.
He stated that Simone was entirely innocent and simply a convenient, necessary asset for his investigation.
Daniel proudly announced that he already had enough digital evidence to put Adrienne in a federal supermax prison for the rest of his life.
He arrogantly demanded that Adrienne surrender peacefully right now, or the FBI tactical team waiting outside would breach the penthouse.
Adrienne laughed a dark, humorless laugh that sent a visible shiver directly down Simone’s spine.
He casually informed Daniel that the penthouse windows were completely bulletproof and the elevator required a biometric scan to access.
Adrienne picked up the silver handgun and pointed it directly at Daniel’s chest.
He told the agent that no one was leaving this private office alive tonight.
Simone suddenly rushed forward and boldly placed herself directly between Adrienne’s gun and Daniel’s chest.
Adrienne’s finger completely froze on the trigger as he stared at her in absolute, stunning disbelief.
Simone looked him dead in the eyes and told him she would not let him become a murderer tonight.
Before Adrienne could process her incredible bravery, Marcus suddenly raised his own weapon.
Marcus did not aim his gun at the federal agent.
May you like
He aimed his heavy weapon directly at the back of Adrienne’s head.
Marcus smiled wickedly and announced that the FBI paid significantly better than the Romano syndicate ever did.
