Chapter 8 - The Fatal Mistake

Lorenzo gasped violently as a bright red stain rapidly spread across his crisp designer shirt.

He looked down in absolute shock at the massive bullet hole entirely piercing his right shoulder.

Bruno was leaning heavily against the ballroom doorway holding a smoking pistol in his steady hand.

The loyal security chief had refused to stay behind and had followed them up the grand staircase.

The sudden impact of the heavy bullet forced Lorenzo to stumble backward against the stone railing.

His grip weakened drastically and the terrified little girl slipped completely from his treacherous hands.

Emma tumbled backward over the edge of the high balcony toward the jagged rocks far below.

Alejandro lunged forward with incredible speed fueled by pure adrenaline and desperate fear.

He slid aggressively across the polished wooden floor and reached his arm out over the dark abyss.

His strong fingers clamped tightly around the strap of Emma's pale pink rabbit backpack.

He slammed his chest hard against the stone railing and completely stopped her terrifying fall.

He used all his remaining strength to pull the crying child safely back over the balcony edge.

Lorenzo collapsed lifelessly onto the cold marble stone as his body finally gave out from the severe wound.

Claire rushed forward frantically and wrapped her trembling arms around her precious daughter.

She kissed the little girl a thousand times and wept tears of pure overwhelming joy.

Alejandro stood up slowly and looked at the beautiful broken family he had just managed to save.

He finally felt the heavy crushing weight of his own daughter's death begin to lift from his soul.

He realized that saving this innocent child had magically healed a dark part of his shattered heart.
