Chapter 6 - The Wrong Wire
Alejandro stared at the tangled mess of red and yellow wires connecting the detonator to the explosives.
Sweat dripped slowly down his forehead as the digital timer ticked past ten seconds.
He knew that cutting the wrong wire would instantly trigger the massive blast and vaporize them.
He remembered an old explosive training manual he had studied during his early days in the syndicate.
He carefully slid the sharp blade of his knife under the thickest yellow wire.
Claire squeezed her eyes tightly shut and prayed quietly for her young daughter's future.
Alejandro severed the yellow wire with a single swift motion of his hand.
The blinking red light froze immediately and the digital timer stopped at exactly three seconds.
He let out a heavy breath of relief and quickly cut the thick metal wires binding Claire to the chair.
She collapsed into his strong arms and thanked him desperately for saving her life.
He helped her stand up and told her that they needed to find her daughter immediately.
His secure radio earpiece suddenly crackled to life with a frantic transmission from Bruno.
Bruno sounded completely terrified and breathless as he spoke over the heavy static.
He reported that Lorenzo had doubled back through a hidden panel and ambushed the remaining guards.
Alejandro felt his blood run completely cold as he anticipated the worst possible news.
Bruno painfully confessed that Lorenzo had managed to steal Emma away during the chaotic gunfight.
The treacherous brother had taken the little girl up to the grand ballroom on the third floor.
Alejandro looked at Claire and saw her entire world shatter into a million painful pieces.
