Chapter 8 - The Bleeding Heart

"No, no, no!" I screamed, throwing myself entirely over Declan's chest.
I began performing chest compressions with all the strength I had left in my arms.
"Don't you dare leave us," I sobbed, pushing down hard on his sternum.
The driver swerved violently through the mountain curves to lose our pursuers.
I pushed again, begging Declan to fight for the family he never knew he had.
Declan suddenly gasped violently, spitting up a mouthful of dark blood.
His heart monitor began to beep again, faint but incredibly steady.
The driver managed to lose the Calloway men in the dense, winding forest roads.
We crashed through a hidden gate and arrived at a secret Voss underground medical bunker.
A team of doctors rushed out, pulling Declan onto a stretcher and sprinting down the hall.
I sat on the cold floor of the waiting room, entirely covered in his blood.
Hours passed in agonizing, suffocating silence.
Finally, the lead surgeon emerged from the operating room with a grim expression on his face.
"He survived the surgery, but he is extremely weak," the doctor informed me gently.
I closed my eyes and cried tears of overwhelming relief.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the bunker began to flash furiously.
The surgeon looked up in absolute horror as the heavy steel blast doors locked shut automatically.

"The Calloway family just hacked our mainframe," the doctor panicked.
"They are pumping lethal gas through the ventilation system right now."
