Chapter 1 - The Black SUV

I held my breath as the dark tinted windows of the SUV rolled down.

The tiny grocery store in the mountains felt entirely too quiet.

Heavy combat boots hit the wet pavement outside the glass door.

I pressed my back against the cereal aisle, resting one hand protectively over my pregnant belly.

The bell above the entrance chimed violently.

Three men walked in, and they were not wearing the tailored suits of Declan’s syndicate.

They were wearing the heavy leather jackets of the Calloway family.

One of the men held up a crumpled photograph of my face to the terrified cashier.

Savannah Calloway had found me first.

I did not wait to hear what they asked the cashier.

I slipped silently through the swinging doors into the back storage room.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I pushed open the alley door.

I stepped out into the freezing rain and began to run.

My wet shoes slipped on the cobblestone, but I forced myself to keep moving.

I needed to reach the bus station before they realized I had escaped.

Suddenly, a massive hand clamped over my mouth from the shadows.

I screamed into the leather glove and struggled wildly.

A strong arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me into the darkness between two brick buildings.

A familiar voice whispered harshly against my ear.

"Stop fighting me, Amelia."

I froze completely.

It was Gavin Roarke, Declan’s ruthless chief of security.

He spun me around to face him, his eyes completely devoid of emotion.

I waited for him to drag me to a waiting car to take me back to his boss.

Instead, Gavin slowly raised a silenced pistol and pointed it directly at my chest.

"I am not here to take you back, Amelia," Gavin whispered coldly.

"I am here to finish the job."
