Chapter 6 - The War Zone

Declan looked like a demon walking out of hell.
His eyes were entirely black with rage as he raised his weapon without a single word.
He opened fire, and Savannah's men dropped to the ground before they could even aim.
Savannah screamed in terror and dove behind a shattered vehicle to avoid the hail of bullets.
Declan dropped his empty rifle and sprinted across the street toward me.
He grabbed my shoulders, his chest heaving as he frantically checked my body for injuries.
"Amelia," he choked out, pulling me fiercely against his chest.
His large hand slid down my back and brushed against the noticeable curve of my stomach.
Declan froze completely.
He pulled back and stared down at my belly, his mouth falling slightly open.
Tears instantly filled his dark, violent eyes.
"You're pregnant," he whispered, his voice cracking with overwhelming emotion.
"I didn't know."
"You said I was a problem that needed to be resolved," I cried, hitting his chest.
"I was faking my engagement to Savannah so I could destroy her family from the inside," he pleaded.
"I was going to give you a new identity so you would never be in danger."
Before I could answer, the roar of engines echoed from the bottom of the mountain.
Dozens of Calloway reinforcement vehicles were speeding up the road with heavy machine guns.
Declan forcefully pushed me behind the thick steel door of his armored truck.
"Get in and do not look back," he ordered, kissing my forehead softly.
"I will hold them off."
He slammed the door shut, locking me safely inside the bulletproof cabin.

He slapped the hood of the truck, commanding his driver to go.
As the truck sped away, a high-caliber sniper bullet tore completely through Declan's shoulder.
