Chapter 7 - The Crash

I screamed and slammed my fists against the bulletproof glass.

I watched in the rearview mirror as Declan fell to his knees in the mud.

He was instantly surrounded by dozens of heavily armed Calloway soldiers.

I grabbed a loaded pistol from the truck's glove compartment.

I pressed the cold metal barrel against the back of the driver's head.

"Turn this truck around right now," I screamed with absolute authority.

"My orders are to protect the Voss heir at all costs," the driver replied, keeping his foot on the gas.

I moved the gun and pressed it firmly against my own temple.

"If you do not turn back, there will be no heir to protect," I threatened darkly.

The driver cursed loudly and violently whipped the steering wheel around.

The massive armored truck drifted on the wet road and plowed straight back through the barricade.

I threw the passenger door open as the truck skidded to a halt near Declan's bleeding body.

I grabbed him by his bloody collar and dragged his heavy frame into the cabin.

Bullets shattered the outer layer of the truck's armor like hail in a storm.

The driver slammed on the gas, tearing down the mountain road to escape the ambush.

Declan looked at me with a weak, bloodstained smile.

"You came back for me," he whispered, his hand weakly touching my stomach.

His eyes slowly rolled back into his head.

The tactical heart monitor strapped to his wrist suddenly flatlined with a long, piercing beep.
