Chapter 5 - The Ashes

I stared out the window and saw the dark silhouettes of Savannah's men holding assault rifles.
"You have exactly one minute to walk out the front door," Savannah commanded over the phone.
"If you don't, I will burn you, the old lady, and your little bastard child to ashes."
The line went dead.
I dropped the phone and ran downstairs to the main shop.
I told June to use the underground cellar tunnel to escape into the woods.
"I am not leaving a pregnant girl to die alone," June argued, raising her shotgun.
"If you fight them, we both die," I cried, pushing her toward the cellar door.
"I have to do this to save my baby."
June looked at me with deep respect before disappearing into the darkness of the tunnel.
I took a deep breath, placed my hands on my head, and walked out the front door.
Savannah was standing in the middle of the street, wearing a designer trench coat.
She smiled wickedly and tossed my grandmother's ring into the muddy puddle at her feet.
She held up a silver lighter, flipping the lid open to reveal a bright flame.
"Declan belongs to me," Savannah sneered, stepping closer.
"And I don't share my empire with civilian trash."
She ordered her men to raise their weapons and execute me.
I closed my eyes and prayed for my unborn child as the men pulled back the charging handles.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed down the mountain road.
A massive, military-grade armored truck smashed completely through Savannah's barricade of SUVs.
The truck crushed two of her men instantly before skidding to a halt in the mud.

The heavy steel door of the truck kicked open.
Declan Voss stepped out into the freezing rain, holding a fully automatic assault rifle.
