Chapter 2 - The Loyalist

I stared at the barrel of Gavin’s gun in absolute horror.
I closed my eyes tightly and wrapped both arms around my stomach to shield my baby.
A soft, suppressed gunshot spit through the rainy alleyway.
I braced for the impact, but I did not feel any pain.
I slowly opened my eyes.
The Calloway hitman who had been sneaking up behind me dropped dead onto the concrete.
Gavin lowered his weapon and let out a heavy sigh.
"You really think I would hurt you?" Gavin asked, shaking his head.
I backed away from him, my body trembling violently.
"Declan said I was going to be resolved quietly," I cried.
Gavin cursed under his breath and stepped closer.
"Savannah spliced that audio recording to make you run away," Gavin explained urgently.
"Declan meant he was giving you a new identity so you could escape the mafia life."
I stared at him, desperately wanting to believe the words.
"He has been tearing the entire country apart looking for you," Gavin added.
"The Calloways have a mole in our inner circle, and they tracked my location to find you."
He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward a hidden black sedan parked at the end of the alley.
"We need to get you to a safe house before more of them show up," he commanded.
I climbed into the passenger seat, my mind spinning with this new reality.
Declan never wanted to kill me.
Gavin slid into the driver’s seat and turned the ignition.
The moment the engine roared to life, all four doors instantly locked with a loud mechanical click.
A digital countdown timer on the dashboard suddenly lit up in bright red numbers.
Gavin violently pulled the door handle, but it was jammed completely.
The timer began ticking down rapidly from ten seconds.

Gavin looked at me with pure terror in his eyes.
"It is a car bomb," he yelled.
