Chapter 5 - Following the Blood Money

A week later, Elias walked into Julian’s office and dropped a thick black binder onto the desk.

"You were right, boss," Elias said, looking grim. "Genevieve Dupont doesn't exist. Her real name is Genevieve Vance. And she isn't old money."

Julian opened the binder. The pages revealed a terrifying history. Genevieve was a professional parasite. She had spent the last decade targeting wealthy, grieving widowers. She would embed herself in their lives, isolate them from their families, legally bind their assets through joint LLCs, and then orchestrate devastating divorces that left the men bankrupt.

"She did this in Chicago, and again in London," Elias explained. "She has offshore accounts in the Caymans holding roughly forty million dollars in extorted settlements."

Julian stared at a photograph of a broken, bankrupt man in London who had lost his company to Genevieve three years ago.

"She thinks she's running the same playbook on me," Julian murmured. "She thinks I'm a mark."

"What’s the play, Julian? We can take this to the police. Extortion, wire fraud."

"No," Julian closed the binder. "If we take it to the police, she gets a lawyer and a plea deal. She serves three years in a white-collar resort. That isn't justice for what she whispered to my daughter."

Julian looked out over the Manhattan skyline. "We are going to drain her Cayman accounts. And then, we are going to trap her in a cage of her own making."
