Chapter 1 - The First Crack

Julian stood at the edge of the plunge pool, the ice clinking softly in his crystal bourbon glass. From the outside, his life was a masterpiece. But inside the penthouse, a subtle, freezing draft had begun to seep through the cracks.

It started with Chloe.

For the past three weeks, the vibrant, bubbly five-year-old who used to run down the halls in superhero capes had grown alarmingly quiet. She had stopped asking for her bedtime stories. When Julian came home from the firm, she didn't rush to the elevator to greet him. She stayed in her room, coloring in absolute, unsettling silence.

The heavy glass doors slid open behind him. Genevieve stepped out onto the slate decking, draped in a sheer silk robe. She wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her perfectly sculpted chin on his shoulder.

"You're working too hard, Julian," she murmured, her voice a soothing, cultured melody. "The Sterling acquisition is finalized. Come to bed. We have the museum gala tomorrow night."

Julian looked at her reflection in the glass. She was flawless. "Chloe was quiet at dinner again tonight," he noted, keeping his voice carefully neutral.

Genevieve sighed, a delicate sound of manufactured sympathy. "She’s just going through a phase, darling. Children test boundaries. I had to discipline her this afternoon for throwing a tantrum over her toys. She just needs structure. I'm providing that."

Julian took a sip of his bourbon. Structure. It was a sterile word. His first wife hadn't provided structure; she had provided warmth. But Julian pushed the thought away, nodding. "You're right. I'm just overthinking."

But Julian Vance didn't build a real estate dynasty by ignoring his instincts. The next morning, after Genevieve left for a charity luncheon and Chloe was at kindergarten, Julian called his head of corporate security. He didn't ask for a bodyguard. He asked for a discreet, voice-activated camera, hidden perfectly in the eye of Chloe’s favorite stuffed bear.
