Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The crisp autumn wind swept across the rooftop terrace of the penthouse. The city below was still a sprawling, endless sea of crushed gold.

Julian sat on the edge of the plunge pool, the water glowing a soft emerald green. But he wasn't holding a bourbon glass. He was holding a plastic tea cup.

"More tea, Daddy?" Chloe asked. She was wearing a bright red superhero cape over her pajamas, her eyes shining with the brilliant, unburdened light that had finally returned to her face.

Maria, the original nanny, was standing by the kitchen island, smiling warmly as she prepared a plate of cookies.

"I would love some more tea, sweetheart," Julian smiled, holding out his tiny plastic cup.

The nightmare was over. Genevieve was sitting in a federal holding cell, facing two decades in prison without a dime to her name. The toxic draft that had invaded their home had been sealed out forever.

Chloe carefully poured invisible tea into his cup and then climbed into his lap, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck. Julian buried his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of strawberry shampoo, feeling the fractured pieces of his soul finally knit back together.
