Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

I lowered my weapon slightly, my hands trembling with an explosive, uncontrollable rage.
"Why are you doing this, Franklin?" I asked, trying to buy time to formulate a plan.
Yates laughed, a sound entirely devoid of human empathy.
He confessed that he had discovered the unique regenerative properties of my family's bloodline years ago.
He needed the twins alive to synthesize a revolutionary, billion-dollar anti-aging serum for the black market.
"I am going to be the richest man on the entire planet, Lawson," he declared proudly.
He slowly backed toward the driver's side door of the medical van.
I knew I could not risk a single stray bullet setting off the explosives beneath my children.

It was my head of security, who had finally fought his way through Vane's men upstairs.
The SUV slammed directly into the side of the medical van, crushing the driver's door completely.
The violent impact knocked Dr. Yates off his feet, sending the detonator skittering across the smooth concrete floor.
I sprinted forward with everything I had left.
I dove and snatched the detonator just seconds before Yates could reach it.
Yates pulled a hidden revolver from his coat and fired wildly in my direction.
A bullet tore through my side, burning like a hot iron rod, but I did not stop.
I tackled the doctor to the ground and disarmed him with a brutal strike to his wrist.
I pointed his own revolver directly at his forehead.

Before I could pull the trigger, the terrible sound of a flatline alarm began blaring from inside the crushed medical van.
Blythe's heart had just stopped beating.
