Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

I stared at Dr. Yates, feeling the crushing weight of an impossible choice.
Outside the heavy steel doors, the relentless pounding of Vane's men echoed like a death knell.
"Is there any other way to stabilize the twins?" I asked desperately.
Dr. Yates shook his head, his hands trembling as he arranged the surgical tools.
"They have hours left at most, Lawson, the stress of the attack is accelerating their organ failure."
Clara pushed herself away from the wall, her breathing shallow but determined.
She walked over to the metal table and laid down without a single hesitation.
"Do the procedure right now, Doctor," Clara commanded with absolute authority.
I grabbed her hand, overwhelmed by the incredible sacrifice this stranger was willing to make.
"You could die, Clara," I whispered.
She looked at me and smiled, a beautiful, tragic expression that mirrored my late wife.
"Genevieve gave her life to keep me hidden so that I could save them today," she replied.
Dr. Yates administered a local anesthetic and began the grueling extraction process.
I stood guard by the door, clutching my weapon as sparks began to fly from the titanium hinges.
Vane's men were using a thermal cutting torch to melt through the safe room door.
I watched the bright orange metal slowly give way, knowing I only had a few rounds left in my magazine.
Dr. Yates successfully extracted the marrow and immediately began the transfusion into the twins.
Just as the final drop of life-saving marrow entered Jonah's IV line, the safe room door violently collapsed inward.
Through the thick gray smoke, Crosby Vane stepped into the room holding a massive assault rifle.

He pointed the barrel directly at my son's head.
"Thank you for doing the hard work for me, Lawson," Vane sneered maliciously.
