Chapter 3 - The Traitor Inside

I stared at the poisoned vial in absolute horror.
Clara gasped and clutched her stomach as a wave of sudden nausea overtook her.
Someone inside my impenetrable fortress was actively trying to murder the only cure for my children.
I pulled my sidearm from my shoulder holster and chambered a round.
"Lock down the entire estate immediately," I roared into my security radio.
I ordered Prescott to seal every exit and cut the external communication lines.
Nobody was leaving this property alive until I found the traitor.
Dr. Yates rushed Clara to the medical suite to administer an emergency counteragent.
I marched down the hallway, my mind racing through the list of staff who had access to my study.
Only my most trusted inner circle knew Clara was even in the building.
I barged into the security control room to review the surveillance footage from the kitchen.
The cameras showed a blurry figure slipping a small powder packet into Clara's tea tray.
The figure was wearing a tailored suit, not a servant's uniform.
I zoomed in on the screen, feeling a deep, sickening betrayal knot in my stomach.
The man on the screen was Prescott, my loyal right-hand man for over ten years.
I turned around to order my guards to arrest him.

Instead, I found Prescott standing directly behind me with a silenced pistol aimed at my chest.
"I am sorry, Lawson, but Crosby Vane pays significantly better than you do," Prescott whispered.
