Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Blood

The silence in my office was deafening.

I stared at the silver necklace, my mind struggling to process an impossible reality.

Genevieve had never mentioned having any siblings, let alone an identical twin sister.

"You are lying," I whispered, though my own eyes betrayed my absolute denial.

Clara stepped forward, illuminated fully by the harsh overhead lights of my study.

She possessed the same emerald eyes, the same sharp jawline, and the same quiet strength as my dead wife.

"Genevieve hid me because Crosby Vane has been hunting our bloodline for a decade," Clara explained.

She told me that our family carried a rare genetic mutation that Vane desperately needed to cure his own terminal illness.

"I am here to give your children my bone marrow today, before Vane finds out I am inside your fortress," she urged.

I immediately summoned Dr. Yates to my office to verify her medical claims.

The doctor drew a sample of Clara's blood and rushed it to our underground laboratory.

For twenty agonizing minutes, Clara and I sat in silence while the fate of my children hung in the balance.

Finally, the heavy oak doors burst open.

Dr. Yates walked in, his face completely drained of color.

"She is a perfect match for the marrow transplant," the doctor confirmed.

A massive wave of relief washed over my exhausted soul.

But Dr. Yates did not smile.

He held up a secondary testing vial filled with a dark, cloudy liquid.

"We cannot do the transplant, Lawson, because someone just slipped a lethal dose of ricin into her tea," Dr. Yates announced.
