Chapter 9 - The Ghost Protocol

The hospital wing transformed into an absolute warzone as my elite tactical team engaged Julian's mercenaries.
The firefight was incredibly loud, but my former operatives moved with flawless, lethal coordination.
They neutralized Julian's private hit squad in less than thirty seconds, securing the entire floor.
The team leader, a towering man named Silas, walked over to me and offered a crisp, respectful nod.
"The perimeter is fully secured, Weaver, and federal agents are currently raiding the lower levels," Silas reported.
I thanked him and ordered two medics to immediately attend to Clara and my newborn grandson in the closet.
I quickly reloaded my weapons, my eyes scanning the chaotic hallway for the monster who started this.
"Where is Dr. Sterling?" I demanded, my voice cold as ice.
Silas checked his tactical wrist monitor, tracking the hospital's internal security feeds.
"He slipped past the federal agents in the basement and barricaded himself in the central oxygen hub," Silas warned.
A cold dread washed over me as I realized exactly what Julian was planning to do.
The central oxygen hub supplied highly flammable, pressurized gas to the entire hospital facility.
If he ignited those tanks, the resulting explosion would completely level the entire building, killing hundreds of innocent patients.
I sprinted down the emergency stairwells, taking the steps three at a time until I reached the sub-basement.
The heavy steel doors to the oxygen hub were locked, but I blasted the hinges off with my shotgun.
I stepped into the massive, dimly lit room filled with towering, pressurized white tanks.
Julian was standing in the center of the room, looking completely deranged and covered in his own blood.
He was holding a heavy steel wrench in one hand and a sparking emergency road flare in the other.
He had already smashed the valves on several tanks, filling the room with the distinct, hissing sound of leaking oxygen.
"You ruined my life!" Julian screamed, his arrogant god complex replaced by pure, pathetic madness.
He held the burning flare dangerously close to the invisible stream of highly flammable gas.
"If I lose my hospital, my wealth, and my reputation, then everyone in this building burns with me!" he roared.
I slowly lowered my weapon, holding my hands up in a gesture of peaceful surrender.

I knew that firing a gun in this oxygen-rich environment would instantly trigger the massive explosion.
I had to defeat him without firing a single bullet.
