Chapter 8 - The Birth Under Fire

The sound of heavy assault rifles bashing against the barricaded door echoed like thunder through the neonatal unit.

Clara was screaming in absolute agony, her body completely exhausted from the drugs and the trauma.

I pushed two heavy medical supply cabinets against the door to buy us a few more precious minutes.

I stripped off my tactical gloves and rapidly sanitized my hands with strong surgical alcohol.

"You have to push, Clara, you have to push right now!" I commanded, adopting a calm, authoritative tone to ground her.

Clara sobbed wildly, shaking her head as terror consumed her entirely.

"I can't do it, Mom, they are going to kill us!" she cried out.

I grabbed her face gently but firmly, forcing her to look directly into my eyes.

"No one is dying today except the monsters outside that door," I promised her with absolute certainty.

Another massive crash shook the door as Julian's men began using a heavy battering ram to breach the room.

Clara screamed and pushed with all the remaining strength in her fragile body.

Amidst the deafening sound of splintering wood and shouting mercenaries, a tiny, miraculous sound filled the room.

The sharp, healthy cry of a newborn baby boy cut through the chaos of the warzone.

I caught my beautiful grandson in a sterile blanket, quickly clearing his airway and cutting the umbilical cord with precision.

Tears of pure joy mixed with the sweat on Clara's face as I placed the crying infant safely against her chest.

She wrapped her arms protectively around the baby, finding a fierce, maternal strength she never knew she possessed.

The wooden door of the neonatal unit finally shattered into a million pieces.

I quickly pushed Clara's hospital bed into a reinforced supply closet, shielding her and the baby from the main room.

I drew my dual pistols, stepping out into the open to face the incoming hit squad alone.

Six heavily armed mercenaries poured through the broken doorway, their weapons raised and ready to fire.

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, centering my breathing and embracing the lethal operative I used to be.

I opened my eyes and pulled the triggers.

But before a single bullet left my guns, the massive glass windows of the hospital wing completely shattered inward.

Three black tactical helicopters hovered aggressively outside the building.

A dozen elite operators wearing unmarked black gear repelled directly into the room, unleashing a wall of suppressive fire.

My old covert operations team had finally arrived.
